This article provides the conceptual basis of explaining how gender equality works in three of its primary dimensions – symbolic, imaginary and subjective – and emphasizes this complex and extraordinary mechanism of social organization which operates in various social ields. It is expressed in speciic ways within the ield of higher education and it determines, obstructs and hinders the participation of women in university life and, speciically, the progress in their academic careers.
